Job summary

University of Maryland Baltimore County seeks an entry-level Laboratory Animal Technician to maintain care and treatment of animals in a College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences facility. Responsibilities include health checks, sample collection, breeding, and assisting in cage washing under veterinary staff guidance.

The role requires following SOPs, operating lab animal equipment, and ensuring humane handling.

Department:

College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences

Position Overview:

The incumbent will maintain care and treatment of animals according to standard operating procedures and to ensure compliance with federal rules and regulations. Specific duties include: daily health checks, treatments, sample collections, breeding and cage changes; updating room logs; Animal medical procedures as directed by the veterinary staff, ensuring cleanliness of mice/rat facilities; assisting in the cage wash rooms - dumping and/or filling cages - as needed and performing other duties as assigned. The incumbent will provide technical support for studies including animal handling and restraint, weaning, timed mating, tail snips, ear tagging, injections blood/tissue collections, surgical preparations, and post-operative observations etc.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year in a laboratory animal facility supporting a research project similar to the type being recruited for.

Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to operate standard laboratory animal equipment including scales, autoclaves, pressure washers, cage washers, steam cleaners, etc.
  • Safely and humanely handle animals for medical procedures.
  • Lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods.
  • Wear and work in personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to stand, bend lift and twist for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate computers and other standard office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in animal science or related area.
  • Technical expertise in rodent injection and blood collection techniques
  • Certification at the ALAT or LAT level
  • Direct experience in providing animal husbandry and veterinary care procedures in a rodent research facility.
  • Training on humanely handling and treating of laboratory animals and demonstrate proficiency in humane handling and treatment of rodents during medical procedures.

A background check will be required.

Pay Range N08 (minimum: $21.75 per hour / maximum: $28.25 per hour) based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, Memorandum of Understanding, USM Board of Regent policies, internal equity, budget and qualifications and experience. Most salary offers will be close to the minimum part of the range.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
