The Animal Clinic of La Porte offers a veterinary externship providing students practical experience alongside Associate Veterinarians. Opportunities include clinical skills development in patient care and surgery, enhancing communication within a supportive veterinary environment. This unique internship facilitates essential learning and hands-on involvement in daily operations.
Job Description
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, they all share some common features: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences at University Veterinary Hospital & Diagnostic Center range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and more details on the stipend program.
