National Veterinary Associates (NVA) offers a hands-on externship experience for veterinary students at The Animal Center of Zachary. This opportunity allows externs to work alongside veterinarians, gaining vital clinical skills, and potentially receiving a travel/living expense stipend to support their learning experience.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with the opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will have the chance to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships at The Animal Center of Zachary.
