National Veterinary Associates offers an externship opportunity for veterinary students to work in a dynamic hospital environment. Participants will gain hands-on clinical experience while collaborating with professional veterinarians, enhancing their skills in diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient management. The externship lasts from two to eight weeks, providing valuable insights into veterinary practice.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Each NVA hospital is unique, but all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Externs will also have the opportunity to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externships at Animal Medical Center Tuscaloosa last from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program.
