Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students the chance to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its unique aspects, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. North Florida Animal Hospital provides a comprehensive general practice experience, including daily urgent care and a wide range of surgical procedures from spay/neuter and dental work to orthopedics.

Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.

Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. View stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
