Veterinary students in the clinical portion may receive a travel/living expense stipend to support their externship experience.
Our mission at Back Cove Animal Hospital is to provide comprehensive, high-quality veterinary care with an emphasis on exceptional client service and patient care. We have a strong team of doctors and technicians who are always excited to share their skills and expertise with others. We are a friendly, outgoing staff that is welcoming to students. We always have a full schedule of routine and non-routine appointments along with a sterile surgical suite and dental suite that are used daily. We have a boarded veterinarian in small animal medicine who comes to the hospital once a week to perform ultrasounds and echocardiograms for our patients. We also have a boarded surgeon who performs orthopedic and complex soft tissue procedures.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
