NVA General Practice in Boston offers an externship opportunity for veterinary students to gain invaluable hands-on clinical experience. Students will closely work with supervising veterinarians to gather patient histories, perform exams, and manage medical care, among other tasks.
The externship typically lasts between two to eight weeks, providing a supportive environment focused on excellent veterinary medicine. Eligible students may also receive a travel/living expense stipend for their participation.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some common elements: a supportive environment that is committed to excellent medicine and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gather patient histories; perform physical exams; create treatment plans; conduct diagnostics; provide dentistry services; observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures; and manage medical care of patients. In addition to practicing clinical skills, externs will develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences at Back Bay Veterinary Clinic range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details can be found in the stipend program.
