A leading veterinary organization offers externships for 4th-year veterinary students at Gunston Animal Hospital in Lorton, Virginia. Students will work closely with a supervising veterinarian to gain hands-on experience in various clinical tasks, including diagnostics and surgical procedures. This externship also provides opportunities for skills development in communication and patient management, along with a stipend for living expenses.

Job description

Gunston Animal Hospital is an AAHA-accredited hospital in the Greater DC area. We are a small animal GP practice that offers appointments, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry. We’d love for you to extern with us - we are a close-knit team who get along well and would love to work with you!

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Gunston Animal Hospital are offered to 4th-year veterinary students.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
