Join NVA as an extern and gain practical, hands-on clinical experience in veterinary medicine. You will work closely with experienced veterinarians in a supportive environment, enhancing your skills in patient care and communication. This externship allows veterinary students to learn and grow in a professional setting, with potential stipends for living expenses.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital has its own characteristics, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their academic year, are encouraged to participate.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for more details on the program.
