National Veterinary Associates offers an externship for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students, providing hands-on experience in animal care under the supervision of experienced veterinarians. Participants will enhance their clinical skills and communication while gaining insights into daily hospital operations over a 2-8 week period.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with the opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient medical care. Additionally, externs will enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. At Flying Cloud Animal Hospital, externships are designed for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view the stipend amounts and HERE for stipend program details.
