Ingersoll Animal Hospital offers a structured externship for veterinary students in Des Moines, IA, to work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain hands-on experience in histories, exams, treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgery.
Externs will also develop communication skills with the veterinary team and clients, with programs typically lasting two to eight weeks; stipends may cover travel and living expenses.
Ingersoll Animal Hospital is a full-service veterinary hospital. We have a rehab facility one block away, Pawsitive Strides. Together, we can offer a full range of services. Ingersoll is conveniently located in a district rich with character, small shops, public art, and a vibrant dining scene.
Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Ingersoll Animal Hospital are designed for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
