Job summary

Vinton Veterinary Hospital, part of National Veterinary Associates, offers veterinary externship experiences from two to eight weeks. Students work with supervising veterinarians to gain hands-on exposure across history-taking, exams, and treatment planning, with opportunities to observe or assist procedures and develop client communication.

Clinical sessions emphasize teamwork and professional growth, with a travel/living expense stipend available as part of NVA’s externship stipend program.

Qualifications

Description & Requirements

We are a group of sister hospitals which brings a large variety of skill sets as well as environments to experience. We also host several specialists at our Vinton location which would offer opportunities to observe higher level procedures and practices such as advanced ultrasound, advanced dentistry, advanced nutrition, etc.

Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians atVinton Veterinary Hospital to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
