Work Schedule: Shift work (may include overnight, weekend, holiday)

Job Summary:

Instruct and assist year-four professional veterinary students. Maintain equipment and supplies inventory in clinical areas. Provide high-quality veterinary technical assistance in several clinics/departments of the VTH including equine medicine and surgery, food animal medicine and surgery, etc. All other duties as assigned. This position involves heavy manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and over 50 pounds occasionally. Must be capable of lifting animals onto exam tables and into elevated cages. Promotional opportunities may be available through an established career development plan. Shift differentials are available. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation.

Exposure and Safety:
  • Exposure to animal diseases transmissible to humans.
  • Subject to animal scratches or bites.
  • Exposure to chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical waste, animal feces, urine, blood, vomit, and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic drugs.
  • Loud noises related to animals are routine.
  • Must comply with mandatory rabies pre-exposure vaccination program.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • High School/GED
  • Two years related experience; or Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited program with two years related experience; or Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences or related area; or DVM degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in restraint of small and large animals, administering injections, and placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters.
  • Knowledge of equipment used within VTH including computers, telephones, copy machines, laser, video endoscope, diagnostic lab equipment, cameras, electrodiagnostic equipment, etc.
  • Physical ability to lift animals weighing 50 pounds or greater onto exam tables and into cages.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology.
  • Five years' experience as a Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA or credentials in a specialty.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS).
