Veterinary Assistant - Emergency Critical Care

Full-time: 3 day, 12 hour shifts - overnight and swing shift available

Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists San Antonio is looking for an Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our team as part of the Thrive Pet Healthcare community.

About You

As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll play an important role in pets' lives by providing comprehensive care throughout their journey. Your work will include hands-on care, facilitating outpatient treatments, performing laboratory tests, assisting in surgeries, and supporting services such as admitting and discharging patients.

Experience & Skills Requirements:

• Has 2+ years of experience.
• Exceptional technical skills including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, radiographic positioning, drug calculations, and administering medications and fluids.
• Ability to handle, lift, and restrain animals (dogs, cats, pocket pets, etc.) and stand for long periods.
• Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures, and terminology.
• Organizational and computer skills.
• Great communication and interpersonal skills.
• Willing to work weekends, overnights, and holidays.

Role Responsibilities:

• Support veterinarians to ensure quality veterinary care, advocate for pets, and educate clients.
• Assist veterinarians and the medical team to maximize productivity and maintain positive patient flow.
• Triage emergency patients.
• Monitor hospitalized patients.
• Perform laboratory tests and nursing care.
• Assist vet techs and DVMs with patient care, surgeries, and procedures.
• Communicate with clients about pet health concerns and treatment options.
• Maintain accurate medical records with practice systems.
• Obtain health history from clients and maintain medical charts.
• Use safe restraining techniques and follow protocols to keep treatment areas clean and organized.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Equipped with advanced technology such as CT, MRI, linear accelerator, ultrasound, and an in-house blood bank, and featuring a full pharmacy, our hospital has over 25 years of experience in emergency medicine and critical care.
