Job description

Quioccasin Veterinary Hospital is looking for a full-time or part-time Veterinary Assistant to join our team!

Location : 9218 Quioccasin Rd, Richmond, VA 23229

Wage : $15 - $17 per hour, based on experience and qualifications

We are a growing, 5-doctor, AAHA-accredited small animal hospital located in the heart of Richmond, VA. We primarily care for dogs and cats-with the occasional pocket pet-and are passionate about delivering high-quality, compassionate veterinary care.

Clinic Hours

  • Monday - Friday : 8 : 00 AM - 6 : 00 PM
  • Saturday : 8 : 00 AM - 12 : 00 PM

Team members must be available to work rotating Saturdays.

  • Saturday rotation required

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a dedicated and motivated team member who :

  • Has experience in restraint techniques and is familiar with medical terminology
  • May be a current or past student of a local veterinary science program
  • Possesses a strong work ethic , positive attitude , and self-starting mindset
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment
  • Understands that a clean hospital is a healthy hospital and takes pride in maintaining a tidy workspace
  • Is comfortable with room check-ins and acting as a scribe

Services We Offer

  • Surgery : Routine soft tissue and smaller orthopedic procedures (e.g., amputations, C-sections)
  • Laser Therapy : K-Laser and handheld units
  • Fear Free Practices : Low-stress handling techniques
  • Cat Friendly : Separate cat-specific exam rooms, open cat condos, cat trees with window views
  • Software : Impromed
  • Diagnostics : IDEXX in-house laboratory equipment
  • Dental Suite : 2 tables with dual digital dental X-ray units

We're in the final phase of our hospital renovation, with new spaces designed to improve workflow and elevate patient care. Here's what's coming :

  • 9 exam rooms
  • 2 compassion rooms
  • 1 surgery suite with dual surgical tables
  • A modern dental suite with digital X-rays

Renovations are scheduled to be completed by summer -we are putting the finishing touches on our upgraded facility!

Responsibilities

How you'll make an impact :

  • Our Veterinary Assistants assist the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians in all of their duties
  • The Veterinary Assistant helps to prepare animals for exams and surgery.
  • The Veterinary Assistant aids in performing medical treatments.
  • The Veterinary Assistant will perform or prepare laboratory tests.
  • The Veterinary Assistant will administer medications under the direction of a Veterinarian or Veterinary Technician.
  • The Veterinary Assistant will obtain and properly handle / prepare in-house and laboratory specimens (cytology, blood draws, blood smear, fecal, etc.)
  • The Veterinary Assistant works in cooperation with staff to attend to any immediate needs.
  • The Veterinary Assistant handles animals and their owners in a responsive, courteous and tactful manner, and inform staff and clients of any pertinent medical information related to animal care.
  • The Veterinary Assistant maintains a healthy, safe, sanitary, pleasant and clean facilities for the animals.

Qualifications

Physical demands and work environment

  • The Veterinary Assistant must have the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds and lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of a coworker. Requires sufficient ambulatory skills.
  • The Veterinary Assistant must be able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
  • The Veterinary Assistant is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication / controlled substances.
  • The Veterinary Assistant must be fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to perform successfully the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position.
  • The Veterinary Assistant must be able to exchange accurate information with all clients and team members.
