Veterinary Cancer Group of LA - Veterinary Assistant Position

Veterinary Cancer Group of LA is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our exceptional oncology team! Founded in 1992, Veterinary Cancer Group of Orange County has grown from a one-doctor practice into one of the largest and most renowned veterinary oncology groups globally. We are celebrating 30 years of service this year.

Our location in Tustin offers proximity to beautiful beaches, hiking trails, excellent restaurants, boutiques, museums, Sony Pictures Studios, and more. We have three additional sites throughout Southern California.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and maintain cleanliness of the hospital, exam rooms, treatment areas, cages, and runs.
  • Stock and restock supplies throughout the day, updating inventory requests as needed.
  • Assist doctors and technicians with restraint and treatment of patients.
  • Escort clients and patients to/from waiting areas, lobby, and back areas.
  • Record patient weights accurately.
  • Obtain current patient charts and drop off forms as necessary.
  • Set up for procedures such as bone marrow aspirates, catheter placements, and fine needle aspirations.
  • Administer oral medications, SC injections, and SC fluids.
  • Perform in-house lab tests including VCH, PCV, and Vet-Test in house chemistry analyzer.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, including maintaining the cold sterile tray.
  • Assist in running EKGs.
  • Ensure animals are comfortable with towels, water, litter pans, and proper identification.
  • Learn hazardous waste disposal procedures, including chemo, sharps, and pharmaceutical waste.
  • Walk dogs every 4-6 hours, change and sanitize litter pans, water/feed animals as directed.
  • Wash, fold, and store laundry.
  • Prepare saline flushes for chemotherapy administration.
  • Take patient histories and initiate computer records.
  • Release patients to owners under technician or doctor supervision.
  • Assist front desk staff as needed.
  • Administer IM injections.
  • Perform routine procedures such as blood draws and urine collection.
  • Enter charges and calculations into the computer system.
  • Take x-rays competently.
  • Prepare and send out outside lab tests, including blood, urine, and cultures; initiate forms for histopathologies and cytologies.
  • Accurately measure TPR (temperature, pulse, respiration).
  • Handle and restrain fractious or aggressive animals safely.
  • Relay messages and information effectively over the phone.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Work Hours and Compensation:

Full/Part-time positions available; 10-hour shifts. Must be available from 8 am to 7 pm.
