Job summary

Southport Animal Hospital is seeking a Relief Veterinary Assistant or Credentialed Veterinary Technician to support our team on an as-needed basis, primarily covering PTO. The role is ideal for a seasoned veterinary professional who can step in seamlessly with minimal training or supervision.

We ask for a minimum of 2 years of experience in veterinary medicine and RVT credentials if available. The candidate should adapt quickly to changing workflows and contribute to a fast-paced clinic while

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in veterinary medicine.
  • Veterinary Assistant or Credentialed Veterinary Technician (RVT preferred but not required).
  • Ability to jump in, adapt to workflow changes, and support the team where needed.
  • Reliable, flexible, and confident in a fast-paced clinical setting.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Essential Patient Care: assist the medical team with hands-on care and ensure animals are treated with compassion.
  • Be the Go-To Support for the Medical Team: support veterinarians and technicians to ensure a smooth, efficient workflow.
  • Create a Positive Client Experience: assist with scheduling, payments, and communications in a courteous manner.
  • Ensure a Safe and Clean Environment: maintain hospital cleanliness and equipment as part of high standards of care.

Relief Veterinary Assistant / Credentialed Veterinary Technician

Southport Animal Hospital is seeking an experienced Relief Veterinary Assistant or Credentialed Veterinary Technician to support our team on an as-needed/ Relief basis, primarily to provide coverage when team members are on PTO. We are fully staffed when everyone is present; however, coverage gaps arise when team members are out. This role is ideal for a seasoned veterinary professional who can step in seamlessly, adapt quickly, and work with minimal training or supervision.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in veterinary medicine
  • Veterinary Assistant or Credentialed Veterinary Technician (RVT preferred but not required)
  • Ability to jump in, adapt to workflow changes, and support the team where needed
  • Reliable, flexible, and confident in a fast-paced clinical setting
Clinic Hours
  • Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Saturday: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Sunday: Closed

(Relief shifts will be scheduled within these hours as needed.)

Compensation
  • $17 – $21 per hour, with flexibility for higher pay based on credentialing/ experience and ability to work independently with minimal training

  • Create a Positive Client Experience: You'll help create a seamless visit for our clients by assisting with scheduling, payments, and communications, always with a courteous and informative approach.
  • Ensure a Safe and Clean Environment: You'll take pride in maintaining the hospital, performing clinic upkeep and equipment maintenance to uphold our high standards of care.
What You'll Bring to the Team
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A calm and efficient approach, with the ability to handle a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment with composure.
  • Confidence and skill in handling pets of all sizes and temperaments.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in fundamental veterinary skills ranging from laboratory and pharmacy to nursing and radiology is a strong asset.
