Job summary
Commonwealth Animal Hospital in Auburndale (Newton), MA, is seeking an Experienced Veterinary Assistant to join a collaborative, progressive team. You will assist veterinarians with anesthesia, surgical procedures, and patient care, supporting excellent service in a state-of-the-art practice.
The role requires strong anesthesia and surgical nursing experience, excellent communication, and a compassionate approach to animals and clients.

Pay: $28–$35/hour
Commonwealth Animal Hospital is seeking an Experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our collaborative, progressive, and supportive team. As a Veterinary Assistant you'll play a vital role in patient care and work alongside experienced veterinarians to provide exceptional medical treatment.
- Assist with anesthesia, including calculations and patient monitoring
- Intubate patients and support all anesthesia-related procedures
- Place and monitor IV catheters
- Prepare patients and surgical suites for procedures
- Perform surgical nursing duties, including patient intake and discharge
- Rotate between inpatient and outpatient care
- Collaborate closely with veterinarians, who value technician input and communication
- Deliver compassionate patient care while educating clients
Candidates must be comfortable assisting with surgery. This position does not provide surgical mentorship, so prior surgical experience is required.

- Surgical laser
- Cardiology and abdominal ultrasounds
- Visiting internal medicine specialist twice each month
- Extensive soft tissue surgery
- Advanced dentistry, including tooth bonding
- Oncology treatments
- Endoscopy (bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, otoscopy)
- Fecal microbiota transplants
- Stem cell therapy
- Stelfonta treatments
- Nares and soft palate surgery
- Strong anesthesia and surgical nursing experience
- Comfortable calculating anesthesia and monitoring patients throughout procedures
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and support others

- Provide Essential Patient Care: You'll be a key player in the health of our patients, assisting the medical team with hands-on care and ensuring every animal is treated with compassion and respect.
- Be the Go-To Support for the Medical Team: You'll be the backbone of the clinic, anticipating the needs of veterinarians and technicians to ensure a smooth, efficient, and collaborative workflow.
- Create a Positive Client Experience: You'll help create a seamless visit for our clients by assisting with scheduling, payments, and communications, always with a courteous and informative approach.
- Ensure a Safe and Clean Environment: You'll take pride in maintaining the hospital, performing clinic upkeep and equipment maintenance to uphold our high standards of care.
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
- A calm and efficient approach, with the ability to handle a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment with composure.
- Confidence and skill in handling pets of all sizes and temperaments.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency in fundamental veterinary skills ranging from laboratory and pharmacy to nursing and radiology is a strong asset.
