Position Overview

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position supporting animal shelter operations. Employees are staff of the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley, not the City of Las Cruces.

Responsibilities

1. Support and document healthcare and feeding of shelter animals, including assisting veterinary staff with medical treatments, taking vital signs, administering medication, performing lab tests, and assisting in surgeries.
2. Maintain accurate medical records, establish and maintain animal medical files, and communicate with other shelters and facilities regarding animal health.
3. Assist with quarantine procedures, animal husbandry, enclosure setup, feeding, cleaning, and observation of animals.
4. Ensure proper disinfection and sterilization of equipment and facilities.
5. Perform necropsies and laboratory analyses as required.
6. Perform maintenance and record-keeping duties for the shelter.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent plus at least one year of animal healthcare experience under veterinary supervision. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of veterinary procedures, animal behavior, laboratory testing, and safety practices.
• Skills in animal handling, record keeping, and computer use.
• Ability to assist in veterinary services, recognize health issues, prioritize tasks, and communicate effectively.

Additional Information

Position involves exposure to animals, biological materials, and outdoor conditions. It may require working beyond normal hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The position is subject to drug testing. Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview.
