Summary
The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets. The role advocates for pets, educates clients on pet health, and maintains a safe, efficient hospital environment.
Responsibilities
- Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
- Act as an extra pair of eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure the best quality pet care and maximize productivity.
- Communicate with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other associates to maintain patient flow.
- Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times, including procedures that do not require veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance, preparing work for other procedures, ensuring client and pet comfort, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets as permitted by state practice acts.
- Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, and hospital services.
- Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
- Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
- Assist with surgery as applicable.
- Utilize technical skills to the fullest within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties.
- Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program or equivalent education, training, and experience providing required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum 18 years of age to perform duties involving radiography (x‑ray) and exposure to radioactive substances.
- One year related experience, with customer service preferred.
- Ability to perform all required skills of NAVTA approved veterinary assistant programs at a level that aids practice efficiency.

Working Conditions
- Work at a computer for long periods.
- Confidence around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
- May require more than 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings.
- Workplace noise level: moderately high.
- Physical demands: stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds; good hand‑eye coordination, arm‑hand‑finger dexterity, and excellent visual acuity.
- Routine exposure to pets that may bite or scratch; occasional exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and controlled substances.
Compensation
Pay range: $18.40 – $23.51 per hour. The specific rate is based on experience, skill level, and education and may vary by location or applicable minimum wage laws.
