Veterinary Assistant
The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, educating clients on pet health, and maintaining a safe hospital environment.
Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
- Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
- Act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure the best quality pet care and maximize productivity.
- Communicate with veterinarians, veterinary technicians and other associates to maintain patient flow.
- Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times, including performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance.
- Support prep work for procedures, ensuring client and pet comfort, monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed in the state practice acts.
- Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services and related issues.
- Collect relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
- Ensure safety of pets, clients and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and keeping treatment areas, exam rooms and labs clean, sterile and organized.
- Assist with surgery as applicable.
- Utilize technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties.
- Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
- Perform additional assigned duties as required.

Special Working Conditions
- Ability to work at a computer for long periods.
- Comfort around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
- Work may require more than 40 hours per week; includes weekends and evenings.
- Requires ambulation, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
- Good hand‑eye coordination, arm‑hand‑finger dexterity, visual acuity.
- Exposure to a variety of pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, medication/controlled substances.
Experience, Education & Training
- Certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program or equivalent education, training and experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- At least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography.
- One year related experience required; customer service preferred.
Pay Range
$15.19 – $19.41 hourly, determined by experience, skill level and location.
