Location: Lewisville, TX

Duties:

  1. Conduct initial client consultation to review history, medical records, perform physical examination, and recommend diagnostics or surgical procedures.
  2. Provide owners with estimate of charges and obtain informed consent.
  3. Responsible for verbal and written communication with owner and referring primary care veterinarian at all phases of patient's care, including updates on finances and revision of the estimate.
  4. Provide instruction to visiting veterinary student externs from AVMA accredited universities, small animal rotating interns, specialty neurology interns, and small animal neurology residents through anatomy rounds, neurology didactics, case presentations, journal club, mock board examination, and laboratory teaching.
  5. Independently interpret diagnostic results including bloodwork, advanced imaging (radiology, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT or MRI), electrodiagnostics, cultures, cytology, or histopathology and make treatment or monitoring recommendations based on results.
  6. Operate medical equipment used in animal treatment, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT, cat scan), Myelograms, Spinal fluid analysis (spinal tap), Electrodiagnostics, Muscle/nerve biopsy, etc.
  7. Independently responsible for all aspects of neurological care: prescribing preoperative medications, interpreting intraoperative monitoring and anesthetic adjustments, administrating intraoperative medication, and performing neurologic surgical procedures.
  8. Prescribe medications for home care, write discharge instructions, and advise on follow-up care with neurologist, primary care veterinarian, or rehabilitation specialists.
  9. Directly supervise small animal rotating interns, specialty neurology interns, and neurology residents in all aspects of case management and communication.
  10. Field consultation calls from the referring veterinary community.
  11. Serve as primary on-call or back up to senior resident for after hour emergency neurological procedures.
  12. Supervise Small Animal Neurology Residents in the study design and research methods, research practices, and peer-reviewed manuscript preparation to support residency training requirements for publication.
  13. Provide education to veterinary community through Continuing Education Seminars.
  14. Serve on hospital committees or other duties as requested.

Salary from: $165,000 to $247,500 / year

Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree (foreign equivalent accepted)

Skills / Requirements:

  • Completion of rotating veterinary internship
  • Completion of veterinary neurology residency
  • Board certified by ACVIM or eligibility for board certification within two years of start date
  • Active veterinarian license in the state of Texas
