The Animal Services Department is seeking a compassionate and innovative Veterinarian to join our team! Our mission is to create a PAWsitive impact by enriching the lives of animals and people. We accomplish this by caring for thousands of animals (domestic and wildlife) annually and working to reunite them with their owners, rehome them, or transfer them to rescue and rehabilitation organizations. We also play an important role in assisting the public with animal-related concerns. Our department is part of the City’s public safety team, which includes Police, Fire, and Community Improvement. Responsibilities include:- Examining, diagnosing, and treating all sick, injured, and emergent cases at the Animal Center.
- Overseeing routine examinations, preventative care, postmortem examinations, and monitoring the health of the animal population.
- Performing 30-50 spay and neuter surgeries daily, along with other life-saving surgeries to improve adoptability.
- Developing and overseeing veterinary protocols and procedures for support staff.
- Assisting with cruelty and neglect cases, writing medical evaluations, and testifying in court.
- Performing euthanasia according to policies and procedures.
- Being the Managing License Holder for the Animal Center’s premise permit, possessing a valid DEA license, and overseeing VACSP holders.
- Ensuring compliance with VMB, OSHA, DEA, and other regulations.
- Staying current on trends in animal welfare and veterinary medicine; representing the department at professional and community events.
- Being on-call for emergencies and disaster response as needed.

Education and Experience:Graduation from an accredited university with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary M.D. (VMD), and at least three years of recent clinical experience in a veterinary practice, preferably with domestic animals. Experience in shelter medicine and supervisory roles is highly desirable.Licenses and Certificates:Valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory record; professional Veterinarian license in California; and a DEA license. The candidate must be the Managing Licensee for the animal center’s permit.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Theories and principles of veterinary science; animal anatomy; disease causes and symptoms; broad knowledge of species; veterinary treatment and surgical procedures; safe health care practices; supervisory skills; occupational safety; record-keeping; computer proficiency; safe driving; effective communication; ability to handle animals safely; and understanding of relevant laws and regulations.
