Job summary

The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families is seeking an entry-level Veterans Cemetery Caretaker at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, MD. The role involves assistive gravesite work, grounds maintenance, and support of interment services in accordance with state and NCA standards.

Duties include processing gravesite preparation, mowing, headstone cleaning, and operating grounds equipment. Weekend/holiday work may be required.

Qualifications

• Grounds maintenance experience including mowing, trimming, edging, and debris removal.
• Experience operating lawn mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, trucks, or similar equipment.
• Experience with landscaping, turf restoration, headstone maintenance, sod installation, or similar outdoor maintenance tasks.
• Experience performing routine maintenance, cleaning, inspections, or minor repairs to buildings, vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Experience following safety procedures and interacting professionally with the public.

Responsibilities

• Assist with gravesite layout and preparation under supervision.
• Mow grass, trim around headstones, pull weeds, water turf and beds, remove debris.
• Clean headstones and assist with headstone installation; repair sunken graves under supervision.
• Open, staff, and close cemetery office and grounds; answer calls and provide information to the public.
• Maintain supplies, load/unload materials, ensure safety, and support cemetery operations; may work weekends/holidays.
