Job summary

SSA Terminals, LLC in Long Beach, CA seeks a Vessel Operations Manager to supervise daily vessel cargo handling operations and related administrative tasks. You will hire, promote, and terminate staff as required, and lead safety, training, and policy initiatives to maximize efficiency and profits.

Ideal candidates bring 8+ years in terminal operations leadership, strong safety knowledge, and experience managing union labor. A high school diploma is required, with a bachelor's degree preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of leading terminal operations.
  • 5+ years of managing union labor, including local union dispatching rules.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and TWIC card required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all departmental personnel to plan, direct, and coordinate daily vessel cargo handling operations and administrative functions.
  • Conduct employee training on hazardous material handling, orientations, quality improvements, and computer usage.
  • Participate in grievance settlements and implement schedule and policy changes.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Monitor staff to ensure compliance with policies, safety rules, union contracts, and regulations.
  • Promote safe work activities through safety audits and meetings with staff.
  • Monitor expenses to align with budgets and develop plans to increase profits and improve services.
  • Investigate accidents to improve safety procedures and outcomes.
  • Analyze expenditures to inform budgets and profit-improvement plans.
  • Set operations policies and safety procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Vessel Operations Manager supervises all departmental personnel and is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the daily vessel cargo handling operations and associated administrative functions to meet customer standards and maximize profits. Participates in the discipline and employment processes by making decisions to hire, promote/demote, and terminate employment.

  • Responsible for the supervision of subordinate personnel to ensure that all work is accomplished consistently with organizational requirements.
  • Conduct employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientations, quality improvements, and computer usage.
  • Participate in the settlement of grievances.
  • Implement schedule and policy changes.
  • Ensure that continuous improvement is being made with regard to policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Monitor operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, and government regulations.
  • Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.
  • Monitor spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
  • Conduct investigations to determine causes of accidents and to improve safety procedures.
  • Analyze expenditures and other financial information to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services.
  • Set operations policies and standards, including determining safety procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Work environment:

  • Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions, and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment
  • Exposure to computer screens.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Salary Range: $150,000-187,000 per year

The posted compensation range is based on the applicable geographic market for the position and may vary depending on factors such as related experience and skill set. Final compensation will be determined based on these items and other relevant factors.
