Job summary

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. (VHB) invites you to join our NYC team as a Vertical Structures Intern for Summer 2027.

You will gain hands-on experience supporting transportation projects across New York and the Northeast, collaborating with engineers and designers to advance multiple initiatives. You’ll assist with construction document creation using CAD/BIM tools, perform basic structural analyses, and contribute to design development under supervision.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Civil/Structural or Architectural Engineering with structural focus.
• Familiarity with drawing production software and BIM tools is a plus.
• Experience with structural analysis software such as RISA 3D, Ram, Enercalc, and SAP2000 a plus.

Responsibilities

Overview

VHB's NYC, NY, office is looking for a Vertical Structures Intern to join our team. The successful intern candidate will learn technical skills and computational software programs necessary to assist in the completion of transportation projects throughout the state and northeast region.

Position is open for summer 2027.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with numerous VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner.
• Assist engineers with creation of construction documents utilizing CAD and BIM software.
• Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing tasks as assigned by senior structural engineers.
• Prepare written documents, summarize information collected by others, and assemble reports.

Desired Skills and Attributes

• Strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate design both internally with VHB staff and externally with clients and other design professionals.
• Exhibits initiative and high attention to precision and accuracy while completing assigned tasks.
• Able to follow instructions on timelines of deliverables, seek guidance when needed, and elevate issues appropriately if required.
• Introductory knowledge of design of structural systems using various materials such as steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, etc).
• Limited experience in structural analysis, drafting, and design development tasks at various project stages.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET accredited program with a focus in structural coursework
• Familiarity with drawing production software and BIM software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, and Revit is a plus.
• Familiarity with structural analysis and design software such as RISA 3D, Ram Structural System, Enercalc, SAP2000, etc is a plus.

The hourly pay range for this position, located in New York, is $19 to $30. The actual hourly rate offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted hourly range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.
