Departments: Saint Paul Fleet Services and Saint Paul Fire Department
Day Shifts Available: Four 10-hour days | Monday through Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Tuesday through Friday 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Night Shifts Available: Four 10-hour nights | Monday through Thursday 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Night Shift Premium: +6.5% night differential pay after 6 p.m.

- Saint Paul Fire Department – Public Safety Garage 1683 Energy Park Drive (ladder trucks, fire engines, squads, ambulances)
Here's what you can expect to do:
- Perform skilled repairs and diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
- Service and maintain a variety of vehicles including trucks, fire apparatus, hybrid/electric vehicles, and turf/construction equipment.
- Use advanced diagnostic equipment and software to troubleshoot and maintain vehicle systems.
- Inspect and repair firefighting aerial ladders and their hydraulic components.
- Document all repairs, parts usage, and labor in electronic fleet management systems.
The eligible list created from this assessment will also be used to fill Vehicle Technician positions as they become available in various departments within the City.

Position Requirements
Requirements may be met by ONE of the following options:
- Successful completion of a two year heavy truck and/or heavy equipment repair vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience maintaining and repairing heavy trucks and/or equipment.
- Successful completion of a two year automotive repair vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) repairing automobiles, trucks, and/or heavy equipment.
- Successful completion of a documented, mechanical/repair apprenticeship program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, automobiles/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment.
- Successful completion of a small engine or turf and grounds equipment vocational program plus three years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of experience performing maintenance and repairs on some of the following equipment classes; small engine/grounds/turf equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment.
- Six years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance and repairs on some of the following equipment classes: small engine/grounds/turf equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy trucks and/or equipment.
Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license, or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
Candidates Must Meet These Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Requirements
- For positions with Fleet Services, candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL with no restrictions for air brakes within 12 months of employment. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking related offenses are excluded.
- For positions with Saint Paul Fire Department, candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL with no restrictions for air brakes within 12 months of employment. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking related offenses are excluded.
- For positions with Saint Paul Regional Water Services, candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class A CDL with no restrictions for air brakes within 12 months of employment. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving related offenses within the two year period prior to date of appointment. Suspensions for parking related offenses are excluded.
