Job summary

The City of Zanesville is seeking a skilled mechanic to service vehicles and mechanical equipment in our Public Works fleet. The role involves performing preventive maintenance, fueling, greasing, oil changes, and record-keeping for parts and fluids.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is one-year experience in a service station or garage. Should possess basic hand tools necessary to perform mechanical work. Must be able to work any shift and be available for occasional emergency overtime work. Possession of a valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver's License.

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS

Under immediate supervision, services vehicles and mechanical equipment with fuel, lubricants, and accessories. Performs light mechanic work on wear items.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Services vehicles and mechanical equipment. Fills with gasoline and oil and keeps records reflecting amounts used. Greases cars, trucks, and mechanical equipment. Changes oil and filters, checks fluid level of automatic transmission and changes fluid when necessary, checks grease level on regular transmissions and differentials. Follows work orders and prescribed preventive maintenance procedures.

Changes and repairs tires. Tests batteries and antifreeze, and changes when necessary. Checks lighting systems and replaces burned out bulbs, brakes, shocks, joints, etc...

Washes and cleans vehicles and mechanical equipment. Upon approval of Master

Mechanic, contacts local suppliers to purchase parts not in stock. Advises Master Mechanic of low stock levels.

Maintains facilities and equipment. Keeps shop facilities clean, orderly, and in good operating conditions. Performs custodial duties in work area and other areas as assigned.

May test drive equipment or transport to work site following repairs and maintenance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Good working conditions but with frequent exposure to grease, oil, vehicle emissions paint, heat, cold, fumes, noise, dirt, dust and other conditions. The employee must use standard safety precautions due to exposure to injury from operation of equipment and work requirements.

USUAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing duties of this job, the employee frequently stands and walks for extended periods of time, uses hands to hold and control equipment; reaches with hands and arms, climbs and balances, and stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls.Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision, with the ability to adjust focus when performing maintenance work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: components of an internal combustion gasoline and diesel engine;

job hazards and safety precautions.

Ability to: maintain work records; understand and carry out instructions; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and city officials; perform manual labor associated with equipment/vehicle service work; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, city employees, parts sales representatives and general public.

Skill in: greasing vehicles and mechanical equipment, changing oil, and replacing simple parts.
