Job summary

A municipal government in Shaker Heights is seeking a Motor Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair its fleet of vehicles and specialized equipment. Candidates must possess a valid Class B CDL with an Air Brake Endorsement (Class A preferred) and have at least 5 years of relevant experience. ASE Certification is a plus. The role includes a $1500 annual tool allowance and is subject to drug testing.

Job description

Performs difficult skilled work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive and specialized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Must possess Class B CDL with Air Brake Endorsement (Class A preferred).

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
  • Inspecting, repairing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, tools and specialized equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses problems and repairs automobiles, trucks and other equipment;
  • Rebuilds engines, motors, differentials and hydraulic assemblies; repairs front ends and drive trains;
  • Troubleshoots equipment to determine cause of problem; makes necessary repairs;
  • Orders required parts and supplies; performs metal fabrication and welding tasks;
  • Replaces transmissions, bearings, gears, clutch assemblies;
  • Installs water pumps, radiators, batteries, brakes and other equipment;
  • Replaces hydraulic lines on equipment;
  • Performs tune‑ups on cars, tractors, trucks, mowers, weed eaters, etc.;
  • Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as repairing or replacing alternators, starters, lights, wiring;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, and a minimum 5 years experience in repairing automotive and power driven equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

ASE Certification preferred. Possession of a valid Class B CDL valid in the State of Ohio with air brake endorsement (Class A preferred). Good driving record. Personal tool inventory valued at $5,000 and available to be used in this position. Subject to pre-and post‑employment drug testing.

This position includes a $1500 annual tool allowance.
