Job summary

Duke Energy in Charlotte, NC seeks an entry-level Student Technician for preventive maintenance and basic repairs on utility vehicles and equipment. Duties include inspections, diagnostics and assisting senior technicians in garage and field environments.

This role supports learning through hands-on work while scenarios vary by schedule and location. The position offers potential for both full-time and part-time opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a two-year degree program in Automotive Technology or a related field.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
  • Valid Driver’s License; must not graduate before May 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections on light and medium duty vehicles and assist higher classification technicians.
  • Assist with Federal DOT inspections and FMCSR compliance.
  • Diagnose and repair basic electrical, hydraulic and air brake systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with diagnostics and repairs on trailers and powered equipment and maintain technical competency.

Locations

Charlotte, NC: Florence, SC

This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, inspections and basic repairs on utility vehicles and equipment. Includes, but is not limited to passenger cars, pickup trucks, SUV’s, medium and heavy trucks, trailers and off-road equipment. Maintenance operations may take place in the garage or at field locations during various work schedules depending on business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Performs preventative maintenance (PM) inspections on light & medium duty vehicles/equipment and assists higher classification of technicians with PM’s on all vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with Federal DOT inspections.
  • Adheres to all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) for DOT inspections.
  • Provides assistance on dielectric test inspections.
  • Performs diagnostics and repairs on light and medium vehicles, trailers and powered equipment.
  • Maintains the appropriate level of technical competence required to diagnose and repair vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs hydraulic brake systems and component repairs.
  • Assists with hydraulic component repairs.
  • Assists with air brake system inspections and repairs.
  • Assists higher classification of technicians with diagnostics and repairs on all vehicles/equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs basic electric system components, cranking, lighting, charging and assist with basic A/C systems and component repairs.
Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a two-year degree in Automotive Technology or similar field
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must not graduate prior to May 2027

  • Effective communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate ability to interact effectively with peers, customers and management
  • Demonstrate ability to make sound decisions, exercising good judgement and setting priorities
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience with computer equipment, laptops, keyboard, tablets, etc.
Working Conditions & Benefits

Potential for both full-time and part-time opportunities.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Must be able to stand and walk on concrete surface for extended periods of time.

Must be able to work in garage environment with associated noise, fumes and dust and tolerate heights in aerial devices.

Must be able to lift and/or push at least 100lbs several times per shift.

Must be able to carry at least 50 lbs a distance of at least 25 feet.

Repeated bending and twisting is required.
