Salary Grade: NC06 / Salary Range: $34,270.00 - $59,973.00.
Positions 60024169 and 60024184 will be filled from this posting. You only need to apply once to be considered for both.
This position will function as a VERT I at the Greenville Equipment Shop in Pitt County. It involves skilled mechanic work, including servicing and repairing mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel-powered automotive and heavy equipment.
The employee may perform mechanical work at various levels and operate a fuel and lube truck, including fueling trucks and equipment, maintaining proper fluid levels, lubrication, and keeping detailed records.
Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the mechanical system. Basic mechanical tasks include Preventive Maintenance, Tires & Tubes, Wheels & Rims, Cranking Systems, Lighting Systems, Cooling Systems, Fuel Systems, and Hydraulic Systems.
Note: Employee must furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.

Additional expectations include repairing and maintaining automotive and heavy equipment, diagnosing problems, preparing necessary paperwork, and operating equipment safely. The employee must understand written and oral instructions, work in indoor and outdoor environments, and demonstrate safety commitment.
Position requires reading OEM manuals, interpreting schematics, and performing heavy lifting. Work may involve emergency situations and inclement weather. The candidate may operate the fuel truck Low-Boy if needed.
Must operate a state vehicle and hold a valid North Carolina Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement or obtain it within 360 days of hire. Pre-employment drug testing and background checks are required. Steel toe safety shoes are mandatory.
Offer contingent on successful completion of NCDOT post-employment evaluation.
Minimum education: High school diploma or GED, or equivalent experience.
Special qualification: May require EPA certification as a technician.
