Job summary

Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch - Search team. You will lead vector similarity initiatives, design new features, and work with a globally distributed team to push fast, relevant vector search capabilities.

You will contribute to high-performance Java code and collaborate across functions to deliver scalable software. You will mentor engineers, triage issues, and engage with open-source communities to drive quality and innovation

Qualifications

• Proven experience with vector similarity and vector databases.
• Strong proficiency in Java and data structures.
• Experience at scale on search platforms.
• Autonomous with end-to-end project ownership.
• Experience collaborating asynchronously over the internet.
• Familiarity with open source projects and collaboration.
• Knowledge of AI acceleration in development and debugging.
• Ability to work across cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead vector search initiatives to deliver fast, relevant search.
• Build features and fix bugs in Elasticsearch, improving clarity and performance.
• Collaborate with a distributed team on vector search capabilities.
• Explain vector similarity design and APIs to teammates.
• Engage with global community on issues and PRs.
• Write idiomatic modern Java and optimize performance near OS level.
