Job summary

Allen County is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist I (Vector Control) to enforce public health ordinances, conduct lodging inspections, and support mosquito surveillance and nuisance control. The role involves field inspections, reporting, and after-hours on-call readiness to protect community health.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, preference for 1 year of relevant experience, strong writing and communication skills, and knowledge of public health laws.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in biology, Chemistry, Public Health, Public Affairs, Environmental Health/Affairs, Education, or related field.
• One year of experience in inspection, environment, pesticide application or related field preferred.
• Strong writing, problem-solving, and speaking skills.
• Working knowledge of Public Health Laws and Regulations.
• National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification upon employment as required for all public health staff.

Responsibilities

• Investigates complaints about rodents, trash and debris, bed bugs, cockroaches, unfit living conditions, and unmaintained swimming pools.
• Seeks compliance with the Allen County Public Health Hazards Ordinance by educating, issuing legal notices, and participating in hearings.
• Conducts inspections of lodging establishments, ensuring compliance with the lodging establishment ordinance.
• Assists with mosquito surveillance and control programs.
