Job summary

Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Indiana is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist I to support vector control and healthy homes programs. You will perform inspections, address nuisance complaints, and enforce public health codes in lodging establishments and other facilities.

The role requires strong writing, problem-solving, and communication skills, plus the ability to operate field equipment and respond to public health emergencies after hours. Occasional overtime may apply.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology, chemistry, public health, public affairs, environmental health/affairs, education, or related field.
• One year of experience in inspection, environment, pesticide application or related field preferred.
• Strong writing skills with the ability to document work performed, actions taken, or results.
• Strong problem-solving and communication to discuss citizen problems and complaints.

Responsibilities

• Investigates complaints about rodents, trash and debris, bed bugs, cockroaches, unfit living conditions, and unmaintained swimming pools.
• Seeks compliance with the Public Health Hazards Ordinance by educating, issuing notices, and participating in hearings.
• Inspects lodging establishments for compliance with Lodging Establishment Ordinance.
• Investigates public complaints about lodging establishments.
• Assists with lead risk assessments and mosquito surveillance/control programs.
• Responds to public health emergencies after business hours and may perform overtime as required.
