About VCU Medical Center
VCU Medical Center is the region's only comprehensive Level I adult, pediatric, and burn trauma center. As a member of the Burn ICU team, you will care for acute burns and assist with reconstructive needs for burn survivors and individuals injured from fire, chemicals, scalds, electrical burns, and skin loss due to disease. The unit has 16 beds, providing all levels of care for adults with burn injuries and general care for pediatric patients.
Job Roles and Responsibilities
Clinical Nurse I
- Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs.
- Assists in prevention of illness and injury, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision.
- Provides direction, education, and begins developing leadership skills at the unit level.
- Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans.
- Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities/interactions.
Clinical Nurse II
- Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, applying knowledge to specific patient populations.
- Assists in prevention, wellness, and comfort, recognizing and responding to patient status changes.
- Mobilizes resources to meet individual patient and family needs.
- Provides leadership, direction, and education at the unit level.
- Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans.
- Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities/interactions.
Clinical Nurse III
- Demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and applies it to specific patient populations.
- Anticipates patient status changes and intervenes appropriately.
- Serves as a role model, providing direction and education in the clinical setting.
- Delivers and documents age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans.
- Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities/interactions.
Qualifications and Requirements
Licensure and Certification
- Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state.
- AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for continued employment.
Experience
- Clin I: N/A; Clin II: 12-24 months RN experience; Clin III: 3+ years clinical experience.
- Preferred: Experience as LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner; academic healthcare experience; similar patient population experience.
Education
- Diploma or Associate’s Degree from an approved nursing program.
- All RNs without a BSN must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered.
Additional Requirements
- Follows physician/provider orders.
- Practices within Virginia nursing regulations, guided by ANA Code of Ethics and national standards.
- Supervises and delegates tasks as appropriate.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Works all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Physical demands include lifting 20-50 lbs, exposure to hazardous substances, prolonged standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and other activities.
- Mental and sensory skills include reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking, reading, and logical thinking.
- Emotional resilience required for a fast-paced, noisy environment with frequent customer interactions.
