Job summary

Lumentum is seeking a PhD-level optoelectronics expert to design GaAs-based VCSEL devices and technology platforms in a collaborative environment in California. The role involves epitaxial growth, wafer fabrication, device characterization, and data-driven optimization to push performance and manufacturability.

You will coordinate with internal teams and contract manufacturers, contribute IP, and leverage software tools like Python and Matlab for data analysis and modeling, while communicating

Qualifications

• PhD in optoelectronics or Master with 3+ years experience is the minimum requirement; PhD with industry experience is preferred.
• Experience with VCSEL design and wafer fabrication.
• Knowledge of semiconductor device physics, process technology and equipment.
• Experience with software data analysis tools (Excel, JMP, Minitab), photomask layout, and data processing (Python, Matlab).
• Excellent ability to work in cross-functional teams as both a team leader and a contributor.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design GaAs-based VCSEL devices and VCSEL technology platforms.
• Develop design and fabrication flows (mask layout, EPI structure, etching, metallization, passivation, implantation, oxidation, wafer fusion).
• Characterize devices with LIV, spectra, polarization stability, and beam parameters under CW and pulsed operation.
• Analyze data to link device characterization to design inputs and improve performance.
• Coordinate with internal groups and contract manufacturers to transfer designs to manufacturing and release.
• Generate key IP from new design and manufacturing ideas.
