Vascular Technologist I

Part-Time; Rotating Schedule; 2/10hr shifts or 2/12hr shifts

General Summary

Under general supervision, promotes effective laboratory function and test quality in the administration and performance of various noninvasive vascular blood flow tests.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  1. Performs various noninvasive tests, at the request of attending physicians, in the Vascular Laboratory. Tests performed may include duplex imaging of lower and upper extremity arteries and veins, carotid arteries, mesenteric, aortoiliac, hepatoportal, as well as Doppler physiological testing and TCD exams.
  2. Determines which series of tests to give patients based on responses to previous tests and physicians' recommendations.
  3. Reports abnormal results immediately to referring physicians, documenting communication details in the patient's chart according to department policy.
  4. Explains disease patterns and writes preliminary interpretations of test results for final physician review.
  5. Reviews inpatient charts, consults with medical personnel, and interviews patients to gather vascular history and condition details, recommending additional procedures when necessary.
  6. Provides age-appropriate patient care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development over the lifespan.
  7. Assists in lab operations, answering questions, providing guidance, and scheduling patients.
  8. Interacts with biomedical engineering and medical service representatives regarding equipment issues and updates.
  9. Keeps credentials current and participates in ongoing professional development activities.
  10. Trains medical students, fellows, and ultrasound students in vascular testing methods.
  11. Participates in vascular research activities under supervision.
  12. Performs related duties as required.
  13. Working Conditions
  • Part-time shifts with self-scheduling; some weekend, holiday, and overtime work may be required.
  • Requires occasional lifting, and regular walking, standing, pushing, and pulling equipment.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, requiring adherence to safety protocols.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited program in diagnostic ultrasound preferred; certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (ARDMS) or Vascular Specialist (CCI) required.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required.
  • New graduates are welcome.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, vascular lab practices, ultrasound operation, and safety precautions.
  • Ability to evaluate patient condition and apply appropriate testing.
  • Ability to lift 20-30 lbs, assist with patient mobility, and stand for extended periods.
