Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a noninvasive vascular technologist to perform routine and specialized vascular blood flow tests under general supervision. General Summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine and specialized noninvasive vascular blood flow tests. Obtaining a basic vascular history, documenting appropriate clinical indication for the test and providing the patient with an explanation of the study to be performed.


Principal Responsibilities And Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.



  • Performs basic noninvasive vascular testing, at the request of various providers both in our facility and outside. The studies are performed in the Vascular Laboratory and portably throughout the Medical Center. Bloodflow is evaluated using either continuous wave Doppler or Duplex Ultrasound machines. Tests performed may include upper or lower extremity arterial Doppler exams, upper or lower extremity venous duplex exams, upper or lower extremity arterial duplex exams or carotid duplex examinations.

  • Greets and receives patients when in the vascular lab. Knocks before entering a room and introduces self when portably. Interview the patient or review the medical record to obtain pertinent medical history and explains procedures/tests.

  • Upon completion of exam, generate a preliminary interpretation for referring providers.

  • Contact referring providers with any critical findings in the above mentioned exams and document accordingly in VascuPro.

  • Complete the EPIC workflow in a timely fashion, checking the patient in, starting the exam, ending the exam, confirm appropriate billing.

  • Complete the VascuPro workflow completely, to include a full review of all studies previously performed in our laboratory. Properly documenting patient history, accurate completion of the findings grid, generate preliminary finding that will be reported in EPIC and signing off.

  • Interacts on a technical level with internal biomedical engineering personnel and external medical service representatives who are assessing equipment problems and demonstrating new machines, respectively.

  • Keeps credentials current, as well as, updated technical expertise in vascular field by participating in ongoing development activities, such as: attending relevant professional conferences and seminars or reading relevant technical literature.

  • Trains surgical residents, fellows, ultrasound students assigned to the vascular lab area in vascular testing methods and related procedures.

  • Participates in vascular research, gathering data or other designated activities under the supervision of the Research Lead Technologist.


Education And Experience


  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Graduation from a CAAHEP approved program in diagnostic ultrasound technology, vascular concentration preferred. Certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist, or Registered Vascular Specialist. If not registered, must become registered within one year from the hire date.

  • One year work experience performing vascular ultrasound testing preferred. Additional technical experience in a hospital setting preferred.

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities


  • Knowledge of medical terminology, vascular lab practices, operation of specialized ultrasound and vascular blood flow testing equipment, as well as universal safety precautions. Knowledge of how to evaluate arterial and venous waveforms and test results in general.

  • Ability to evaluate the patient’s general condition upon reading individual charts in order to apply appropriate testing or modify the testing when necessary to obtain the information required by the provider.

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills are necessary in communicating with other medical personnel, including attending physicians, and in accurately explaining and documenting test results.


Patient Safety


  • Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
