A Brief Overview

The Vascular Access Insertion Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing specialized vascular access services in a hospital inpatient and outpatient settings as applicable. This role focuses on the assessment, insertion, management, and maintenance of vascular access devices including PICC lines, Midlines, Extended Dwell Peripheral Catheters (EDPs / PowerGlide), ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs, and other approved vascular access devices. The VAIN nurse collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, case management, infection prevention, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure safe, efficient, and evidence-based patient care.

What you will do
  • Assess patients and perform comprehensive vascular evaluations to select the most appropriate vascular access device.
  • Insert and maintain approved vascular access devices, including PICCs, Midlines, extended-dwell peripheral catheters, and ultrasound-guided peripheral IVs.
  • Verify catheter placement, patency, and function in accordance with organizational policy and standards of practice.
  • Monitor for, troubleshoot, and recommend management of complications such as infection, thrombosis, infiltration, and catheter malfunction.
  • Provide patients and families with education about vascular access devices, care, and complication prevention.
  • Apply infection-prevention standards and best practices for catheter insertion, maintenance, dressing integrity, and device care.
  • Serve as a vascular access resource and collaborate with physicians, nursing, case management, infusion services, home health agencies, and other interdisciplinary partners.
  • Respond to difficult-access and escalation requests, prioritizing consults and patient-care needs efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate, timely electronic medical record documentation and track procedural data, outcomes, complications, and quality metrics.
  • Support quality-improvement activities and audits, and maintain ultrasound equipment, insertion supplies, cleaning processes, inspections, and inventory.

Experience Qualifications

Hospital RN experience Preferred Ultrasound IV experience Preferred

Skills and Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of vascular anatomy and access device selection.
  • Strong ultrasound-guided vascular access skills.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and central line maintenance standards.
  • Excellent critical thinking, communication, and patient education skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to prioritize consults and respond efficiently to patient care needs.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse - South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Required
  • Basic Life Support Certified - American Heart Association within 30 Days Required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certified - American Heart Association Preferred
