Job description

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, is seeking a Varsity Field Hockey Assistant Coach for the 2025 season.

All candidates are encouraged to be familiar with Chapin’s website, mission and commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion.

Under the direction of the Director of Athletics and Head Field Hockey Coach, the assistant field hockey coach will aid in the skill development and planning throughout the season. Candidates should have knowledge and experience within the sport and understand how to teach, mentor, and inspire student-athletes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Clear commitment to the educational philosophy and mission of the School and Athletic Department and any ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  2. Effective communicator and educator who can teach volleyball players of all skill levels and abilities and understands the importance of listening as a key component of teaching.
  3. In-depth knowledge of fundamental skills, progressions, and strategies, with the ability to adapt teaching instruction to all athletes.
  4. Models professional leadership and behavior by adhering to the same rules expected of the athletes, displaying a positive attitude, and motivating and inspiring the team.
  5. Knowledge of appropriate safety measures to ensure the well-being of student-athletes.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. 4 days per week. Practices are generally between 3:30pm - 5:30pm. Tuesday & Thursday 7-8am practices. Monday and Wednesday 3:30-5:30pm practices. Games are generally between 4-6pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.
  2. Pre-season: August 18th through August 28th; Regular-season: September 2nd through November 2nd.
  3. Special events requiring additional hours and responsibilities: Homecoming Saturday September 20th, post-season league, and state tournaments.
  4. Must meet and submit all required certifications and documents prior to working with student-athletes (such as Concussion education, First Aid/CPR certification, etc.)
  5. Communicate and meet with the coaching staff on a regular basis.
  6. Communicate effectively and in a professional and timely manner with athletes, and when necessary, parents/guardians of athletes.
  7. Assess skill level of athletes during tryouts and throughout the season.
  8. Must care deeply about each student athlete’s experience on the team; make fair and equitable decisions about appointing positions, playing time, strategy, practice times, support attendance policies.
  9. Must abide by Chapin’s Coaches Handbook, Student-Athlete Handbook, Chapin’s Mission, NYSAISAA and AAIS policies.
Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Candidates must possess or be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification.
  3. Strong field hockey coaching experience with high school or collegiate aged athletes. Experience working in a school setting and coaching female athletes is preferred.
  4. Ability to attend all team practices, meetings, and games August through November.
