Job Title

Valley Vanguard Advisor (Part Time – 10 hours, Exempt: No, Supervisory Org: University Communications (PM))

Job Summary

General responsibilities include advising the staff of The Valley Vanguard, SVSU's student newspaper, on sound and accepted journalistic practices. The advisor will also assist in the recruitment and training of staff members and monitor the newspaper’s operations to help ensure alignment with the objectives outlined in its Mission and Purpose Statement. In addition, the advisor shares responsibility for ensuring that the Vanguard develops and adheres to an annual budget.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide effective counsel to students to ensure the newspaper follows commonly accepted journalistic practices and principles.
  • Advise Vanguard staff on editorial decisions (story selection, copy editing, layout, etc.).
  • Assist in the production of issues, as appropriate.
  • Review and edit stories, as appropriate.
  • Identify resources to assist students in Vanguard operations.
  • Provide training to student staff.
  • Attend regular meetings of SVSU’s Professional Journalistic Practices Committee.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision

General supervision is received from the Vice President for Communications. Functional supervision is exercised over student employees of the Valley Vanguard.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, communications, or other related field.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of newspaper operations.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Proficient in relevant software (Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.) and the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

Working Conditions

Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions. All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.
