Job summary

WestLAND Group is seeking a Vacuum Excavation Technician to support utility locating, potholing, and subsurface investigations across California. You will operate vacuum excavation equipment, assist with mapping, and backfield crews on critical infrastructure projects.

The role requires outdoor work, safety compliance, and the ability to travel to remote sites. Prior hydro excavation and potholing experience is preferred, with a commitment to quality and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1+ years vacuum truck experience required; 1+ years water truck experience preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment and commercial vehicles.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions; lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience in hydro excavation, air vacuum excavation, utility locating, potholing, surveying, or related field services preferred.
  • Travel or overnight stays may be required.
  • Safety certifications (OSHA 10-hour, 40-hour HAZWOPER, etc.) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hydro excavation and air vacuum excavation equipment to expose underground utilities.
  • Perform potholing to verify horizontal and vertical locations.
  • Assist utility locating personnel in identifying, marking, and documenting subsurface facilities.
  • Conduct pre-job site assessments and implement traffic control and safety procedures.
  • Read and interpret utility maps and field sketches; perform traffic control set ups.
  • Document field observations, utility depths, and site conditions accurately.
  • Maintain vacuum excavation trucks, trailers, and equipment; perform inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, client requirements, OSHA regulations, and local guidelines.
  • Communicate with project managers, utility owners, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Be willing to travel to remote project sites and work in outdoor environments.

The Position: A Vacuum Excavation Technician will support utility locating, subsurface investigations, and potholing operations throughout California. The successful candidate will operate vacuum excavation equipment to safely expose underground utilities, assist with utility verification and mapping activities, and support field crews in delivering high-quality geospatial and infrastructure services. This position offers the opportunity to work with advanced technologies while contributing to critical utility, transportation, and public infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate hydro excavation and air vacuum excavation equipment to safely expose underground utilities and infrastructure,
  • Perform potholing activities to verify the horizontal and vertical location of buried utilities,
  • Assist utility locating personnel in identifying, marking, and documenting subsurface facilities,
  • Conduct pre-job site assessments and implement traffic control and jobsite safety procedures,
  • Read and interpret utility maps, plans, traffic control plans, and field sketches and be able to perform traffic control set ups,
  • Support data collection efforts and accurately document field observations, utility depths, and site conditions,
  • Safely operate, inspect, and maintain vacuum excavation trucks, trailers, and associated equipment,
  • Perform routine vehicle and equipment inspections and report maintenance needs promptly,
  • Ensure compliance with company safety standards, client requirements, OSHA regulations, and local agency guidelines,
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, utility owners, contractors, and other stakeholders,
  • Must be willing to travel to remote project sites and work in various outdoor environments and weather conditions,
  • Assist with other utility engineering, surveying, locating, and field services activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent,
  • 1+ years vacuum truck experience required, 1+ years water truck experience preferred,
  • Shown ability to safely operate heavy equipment and commercial vehicles,
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one preferred,
  • Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions, including lifting equipment and standing for extended periods,
  • Experience in hydro excavation, air vacuum excavation, utility locating, potholing, construction, surveying, or related field services preferred,
  • Prior experience working on utility, transportation, or municipal infrastructure projects preferred,
  • OSHA 10-hour, 40-hour HAZWOPER, Tanker Endorsement, or other industry safety certifications preferred,
  • Be physically able to lift 50 pounds,
  • Ability to travel overnight, out of town, work nights, weekends and holidays when needed,
  • Excellent technical and communication skills.
