The Hydrovac Operator is responsible for safely operating hydrovac excavation equipment to expose underground utilities, perform non-destructive digging, and support construction, utility, and infrastructure projects. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, equipment maintenance, and quality workmanship while working in a variety of outdoor environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate hydrovac trucks and excavation equipment in accordance with company policies and industry regulations.
- Perform non-destructive excavation around underground utilities, pipelines, fiber optics, electrical systems, and other infrastructure.
- Read and interpret utility locates, site plans, and work orders.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and complete required documentation.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on hydrovac equipment.
- Ensure proper setup of traffic control, work zones, and excavation sites.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, utility owners, contractors, and crew members.
- Follow OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards at all times.
- Complete daily reports, timesheets, and equipment inspection forms accurately.
- Respond to emergency utility excavation requests as needed.
- Maintain a professional appearance and positive customer relations on job sites.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined or uneven areas.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and occasional overnight travel when required.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening, background check, and DOT physical (if applicable).

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B required; Class A preferred.
- Tanker endorsement preferred or ability to obtain.
- Previous hydrovac, vacuum truck, excavation, or utility construction experience preferred.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
- Strong understanding of underground utility locating practices.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for equipment inspections and minor maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Confined Space Entry
- Competent Person Training
- Utility Locator Certification (preferred)
