Job description

TrussWorks, Inc is hiring a remote candidate for UX Designer - Contract. This is a full time position. Work location: USA, UK, Europe. The role typically involves technologies such as REST, Figma, Agile, Enterprise Systems, Excel, Jira.

Truss is a software development consultancy that builds government technology people actually want to use. Our systems regularly show up in the New York Times, and when we ask our team what they love most about working here, the answer is consistently the same: the people. We’re collaborative, we hold ourselves to high standards, and we care deeply about the craft of making government services work better. We have been a remote-first organization since our inception and are passionate about work-life balance, building impactful teams, and committed to creating environments that encourage collaboration, different points of view, and creative solutioning.

Truss is seeking a collaborative and versatile user experience designer with a strong foundation in research and workflow-based service design. In this role, you will work on a range of products, from custom web applications to implementations of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) enterprise systems like Salesforce. Your role will focus more on shaping user journeys and service experiences than on building UIs from scratch.

You should be comfortable with navigating ambiguity, distilling insights into actionable recommendations, and communicating design rationales to stakeholders. Must be adept at navigating stakeholder dynamics and approaching difficult conversations with clarity, empathy, and professionalism. An ideal candidate is passionate about human-centered design, thrives in cross-functional teams, and enjoys consulting.

This role is expected to work 35 hours per week including the core hours of 10:00am - 4:00pm ET. Must be able to travel to Baltimore, MD twice per calendar year. Hourly rate is $80 - $88 dependent on experience. Contract lasts through April 2027 with potential to extend.

Your Skill Set
Background in human-centered design, research, and service design
Experience conducting research independently, leveraging mixed-methods based on project needs and timelines
Ability to synthesize and translate insights into actionable, stakeholder-ready recommendations
Comfortable designing complex, form-based user flows and prototypes
Comfortable working with an agile mindset that embraces iterative delivery, continuous feedback, and adaptive planning within an agile team environment
Skilled at articulating a compelling design rationale to both technical and non-technical audiences
Understands Section 508, plain language, and accessibility patterns
Interest in consulting and an ability to demonstrate the value of design in enterprise or government settings
Skilled in growing and managing diverse stakeholder relationships
Excellent communication skills, high emotional intelligence, adaptability, and be comfortable with client-facing interactions.
Able to collaborate regularly across the team and with external development teams working on related projects.
Comfortable with design decision-making and with explaining your decision-making to internal project team and client-facing audiences
Comfortable working fully remotely using tools like Slack, Zoom, G Suite, Figma, Jira, Confluence, Teams, and SharePoint

Strongly Preferred:
  • Experience designing for Salesforce, including familiarity with:
  • Experience or Service cloud Lightning Design System (SLDS)
  • Standard Salesforce UI patterns
  • Platform capabilities and limitations
  • Configuration versus customization tradeoffs
  • Bonus points: Experience working with government agencies (federal or state)
Eligibility:

You must be eligible to work in the U.S. and may be required to pass a federal background check at the discretion of the client/project you are placed on. Truss employees must live and work within the contiguous U.S. Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor work visas at this time.

Benefits:
  • full benefits
  • generous PTO
  • a co-working budget
  • an employee effectiveness budget
  • company-wide transparency around salaries and career leveling ( view the Truss Leveling Guide )
