The Borough of Palmer is seeking a landfill/transfer site operator to join our operations team. You will monitor disposal sites, assist with snow removal, and support daily tasks in accordance with safety policies.

This position participates in Borough landfill and transfer site operations.

D1 - DOE
High School diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year of experience in a similar position, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
Relevant experience may include: Driving fleet-small to medium size vehicles, operating skid steer loaders to push scrap metal and bush pile. Using frontend loaders to move trash. Using hand power tools and performing duties in all weather conditions. Familiar with the removal of snow from road ways. Opening and closing the gates at start and end of shift, directing traffic, providing guidance and monitoring customers. Picking up trash, installing signs, building barriers and working as a member of team.
Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.
Current HAZWOPER certification or ability to become HAZWOPER certified within six (6) months of hire date.
Certification in Asbestos Identification.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and physical. Must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series and maintain a current Tetanus (Td or Tdap) vaccination, or provide signed declinations, in accordance with applicable health and safety guidelines.
Monitors the central landfill; ensures customer compliance with policies and procedures.
Effectively answers questions from the public to provide information and resolve complaints.
Closes and opens disposal sites; keeps disposal areas clean and functional.
May operate a variety of heavy equipment.
Develops and plans special projects.
Builds and constructs retaining walls, signage, retaining nets, and fencing.
Assists with the repairs and remodels of transfer site buildings.
Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools.
Maintains chainsaws, weed eaters, chop saws, and other hand and power tools.
Assists in the maintenance and repairs of division equipment.
Monitors automated scale to ensure accuracy.
Monitors the disposal of Asbestos and other special waste in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
Conducts snow removal operations.
Maintains grounds at all division properties.
Assists in the scale house as required.
Performs related duties.
