Job summary

The Municipality of Anchorage's Solid Waste Services is seeking a Refuse Disposal Maintenance Assistant to perform unskilled manual tasks at the Central Transfer Station, Anchorage Regional Landfill, and the Material Recovery Facility. The role requires working four 10-hour shifts with days to be determined.

Responsibilities include litter pickup, grounds maintenance, snow removal, traffic control, pipe assembly, and assisting skilled staff.

This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (Local 302) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

Example of Duties

Under supervision, the Refuse Disposal Maintenance Assistant performs a variety of unskilled tasks of a manual nature. Work involves moderate to heavy physical exertion: litter pick up and grounds maintenance as needed such as lawn mowing, weed whacking, shoveling, replacing signs, and painting. Operate snow blower and sander truck. Perform traffic control at the Central Transfer Station (CTS), Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL), and the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to direct customers to proper drop off locations and reduce traffic congestion and wait times. Assemble gas collection system pipe with hand tools. Operate skid steers and mini loaders for snow removal, site cleaning, and metals recycling. Assist skilled employees as needed in maintenance duties. Perform other duties as assigned.
