Job summary

City of St. Helens in Oregon is hiring a full-time Utility Worker I to maintain water, sewer, street and storm drainage systems.

Day-to-day includes inspections, responding to service requests, and working with a team to uphold safety and reliability. The position offers a Monday–Friday schedule 8:00 AM–4:30 PM with a half-hour lunch, strong benefits, including health, vision, dental, Oregon Public Employees Retirement System, 13 paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, wellness stipend, PPE

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED verified.
  • Valid state driver’s license required.
  • CDL certification or ability to obtain one.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skill in operating relevant tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods.

The City of St. Helens is recruiting a motivated full-time Utility Worker I to join our esteemed Public Works team. This position offers competitive starting pay beginning at $4,127 per month, complemented by excellent benefits, including:

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PUBLIC WORKS UTILITY WORKER

In this rewarding role, you begin your day in St. Helens, Oregon, equipped with essential tools and safety gear. As a Utility Worker I, your primary responsibility is maintaining and repairing vital infrastructure such as water, sewer, street, and storm drainage systems. You conduct routine inspections, promptly respond to service requests, and collaborate effectively with team members to ensure operational excellence. Your dedication to safety and meticulous recordkeeping uphold our City's standards of service and reliability!

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
  • Documented high school diploma or GED (must be verifiable)
  • Valid state driver's license
  • CDL certification (or the ability to obtain one)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Skill in operating relevant tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public
  • Basic knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities
WORK SCHEDULE/LOCATION

Work Schedule: Enjoy a stable Monday to Friday schedule from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a half-hour unpaid lunch break from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM. Seasonal modified schedule depending on weather conditions.
