Under the general supervision of the Crew Supervisor, assists with physical work such as trenching, installing conduit, and helping the Electric and/or Fiber Crews in the daily operation, installation and maintenance of the electric/Fiber power distribution system. Utility Worker I is an entry level position.
Examples Of Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.
- Assists with installations of de-energized underground fiber/power lines, transformers (including primary, secondary, single and three phase transformer connections), and poles while properly using personal protective equipment (PPE) and practicing safe working habits.
- Learns and practices implementing construction standards and safety codes, including familiarization with tools and hardware used in electric distribution and fiber installation.
- Operates a variety of equipment including: tree trimming equipment, and basic hand and power tools.
- Assists in framing new power poles and stringing wire and fiber.
- Assists in installing conduit for both Electric and Fiber networks
- Trims and maintains trees and branches which interfere with power lines, using appropriate tools.
- May assist with patrolling lines, performing voltage checks, inspecting electrical equipment, and troubleshooting and assisting with repairs of fiber/power lines during outages.
- Attends safety meetings and participates in safety programs.
- Assists in locating services of underground utilities.
- Performs general maintenance of equipment including keeping trucks stocked, cleaned, and properly maintained; light carpentry, painting and maintenance of facilities.
- Assists in power pole hole digging; drills preliminary holes following instructions from on-site lead worker; digs pole hole using power drills, chisel and shovel; places power poles into holes utilizing boom truck and tamps dirt to set pole.
- Assists in performing distribution system switching operations.
- Performs routine safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment and maintains records of activities.
- Performs other related work as required or assigned.
Minimum And Preferred Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Utility Worker I:
- Entry level position. Experience in general construction or municipal government is preferred.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Colorado Driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. Out of state candidates must be able to obtain Colorado Drivers License within six months of hiring date.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
- Ability to learn to read and interpret maps and electrical drawings.
- Willing to learn and ability to safely use hand tools and small engine power tools (i.e. Chainsaw; saws all; impact driver, etc.).
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather, including: operating tools on power poles; lifting, carrying, and loading/unloading heavy items and materials; hand-digging in excavation/backfill work using shovels, picks, and rakes.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, customers, and the general public.
- Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to drive and operate motorized equipment, including heavy-duty 1 ton Town vehicles, general electrical equipment.
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations as needed.
- Must be able to work a variable work schedule including overtime, weekends and holidays as needed.
