Job summary

Calcasieu Parish Police Jury in Zachary, LA seeks an entry-level Utilities Technician to perform daily operation and maintenance tasks across water production, water treatment, wastewater collection, and lift stations under direct supervision.

You will assist with routine maintenance, recordkeeping, laboratory and field analyses, meter readings, and respond to emergency calls 24/7, with opportunities to obtain relevant certifications within two years.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 1 year related experience or equivalent.
  • Ability to perform manual labor and operate tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and read gauges.
  • Willingness to work in varying outdoor conditions and respond to emergency calls.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain water production and wastewater systems under supervision.
  • Perform routine maintenance, record keeping, and field analyses.
  • Respond to emergency calls 24/7 and locate/clear service stoppages.
  • Assist in installing new water and sewer services.

Job description

This is the first of four levels in the Utilities Series. Under direct supervision, incumbents perform daily operation and maintenance duties of various water production, water treatment, water production, waste collection systems, wastewater treatment plants, and lift stations.(The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Routine maintenance including greasing and cleaning of plant equipment;
  • Daily record keeping;
  • Perform laboratory and field analyses;
  • Reading and interpreting meters and gauges
  • Routine ground maintenance
  • Perform sampling and routine process control tests
  • Respond to emergency calls 24/7
  • Locate problems and operate sewer cleaning equipment to clear stoppage
  • Assist in installing new water and sewer services.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not require supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D) and one year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Valid Driver's License as per State law or requirement

Also, the ability to obtain the following certifications within two years of hiring based on job assignment:

  • Wastewater Treatment Certification Level 1
  • Wastewater Collection Certification Level I
  • Water Treatment Certification Level I
  • Water Distribution Certification Level I
  • Water Production Certification Level I

UNIFORM

An employee in this position will be supplied with a uniform, provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The employee is responsible for abiding by the Police Jury's Uniform Agreement.
