Job summary

The City of Lee’s Summit is seeking a qualified Utility System Supervisor to lead maintenance staff and oversee water and wastewater distribution systems in a compliant, customer-focused way.

Role entails budget participation, staff development, and adherence to regulatory requirements while ensuring safe, reliable services for the community. Missouri licensing and certifications will be pursued within specified timelines.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in a related field or equivalent years of experience required.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in construction of public improvements, operation and maintenance of public utilities, or related fields.
  • Must obtain Missouri DNR Distribution DSIII License or CWEA or equivalent within 36 months of employment.
  • Must obtain ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Must obtain Confined Space and Entry Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Must obtain Bridge Crane and Rigging Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Must obtain Trenching and Shoring Competent Person within 12 months of employment.
  • Valid State issued driver’s license with acceptable driving history.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in preparation, administration and monitoring of the Department budget.
  • Assists with inventory processes, training and development, and adherence to regulatory requirements.

The Utility System Supervisor, under the guidance of the Utility System Manager, performs a variety of skilled, technical, supervisory and administrative work in the planning, construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of
municipal wastewater collection and water distribution systems. As a representative of management, supports the mission, vision, strategic plan, goals and decisions of the department and City.

Pay $32.78 per hour

JOB SCOPE:

Supervises assigned Maintenance Workers and Equipment Operators. Participates in the preparation, administration and monitoring of the Department budget. Assist with inventory processes, training and development, and adherence to regulatory requirements. Assist in providing reliable, safe, water and wastewater services that are compliant with regulatory agencies. Ensures customer satisfaction and expectations are met consistently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s Degree in a related field or equivalent years of experience in a related field required
  • Moderate experience with a minimum of three years’ in construction of public improvements, operation and maintenance of public utilities, or related fields and
  • Must obtain Missouri DNR Distribution DSIII License or CWEA or equivalent within 36 months of employment
  • Must obtain ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification within 12 months of employment
  • Must obtain Confined Space and Entry Certification within 12 months of employment

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to create an ethical, non-discriminatory and safe work environment
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in waste water collection and water distribution systems
  • Considerable knowledge of sewer pipe installation and repair
  • Considerable knowledge of pump station operation and maintenance
  • Considerable knowledge of water pipe installation and repair
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, CIS, CityWorks, CityView, GIS and other software programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written format with property owners, supervisors, employees and members of the general public
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with a diverse group of customers
  • Ability to communicate, interact and function effectively under stressful and/or confrontational situations
  • Ability to analyze problems and identify workable solutions
  • Ability to guide, train, direct and motivate employees 12. Ability to organize and supervise the activities of others

PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Interacts and works with Utility System Manager-Water Utilities, City employees, suppliers, vendors, service providers, consultants, customers, citizens and members of the general public.
